Gary Clayton.
Born in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria in the North West of England, Gary started getting
involved in filmmaking at college and concentrated in short art-based films,
music videos and animations. He enjoyed the creative freedom the moving image
gave him and developed a passion for story telling through experimentation. Looking to further his creative skills, in 2006 Gary applied to the London Film Academy in London, where he won a scholarship for a one year diploma in Filmmaking. During his placement there, he collaborated in different aspects of filmmaking; writing, editing, sound, directing and director of photography. Mentored by great industry professionals, such as camera operator John Ward and director Richard Kwietniowski, he also had the opportunity to learn from cinematographers Paul Wheeler FBKS and Robin Vidgeon GBCT amongst others. He specialised in the camera department and after graduating he has been involved in various projects and has been working freelance.
In 2008 he worked as camera operator for a short horror ‘Bad Dreams’, a film short listed in a Filmaka competition. The following year he was involved in a short animation to enter the Microsoft Imagine Cup competition called ‘Mr Snowpenny’. Gary went back to his drawing skills, to develop the story and animation through storyboards and illustrations. The team successfully entered and produced another film shot in Egypt, ‘The Curse of the Mummy’s Scroll’, a short comedy film which won them first prize in the short film category. In 2011 he worked as director of photography for ‘Goodnight Rosemary’ to enter another short film competition, Sci-Fi London, which got the team short listed into final five.
Gary currently works in ARRI as a camera technician maintaining his technical knowledge and advancing with the latest digital technology in the camera department. His artistic and technical background along with his passion for storytelling, help bring a unique and powerful style to his films. From storyboarding to director of photography, his imagery supports the story, creating a memorable style and look to his work.
